About this tour
The Somme is quiet farmland today, which is exactly what makes it overwhelming. Between the villages, memorials and cemeteries mark the shape of 1916 with extraordinary precision.
The route is fully flexible: Australian, British, Canadian or French sectors, with time at each memorial for reflection rather than a checklist.
The day ends in Amiens, with a visit to its cathedral: the largest in France, and one of the great achievements of Gothic architecture. Its nave has risen above the old town since the 13th century, a striking counterpoint to the day that came before: a return to permanence and light after a landscape shaped by loss.
